Stormy Landscape With Turbulent Clouds

This early 20th-century oil painting by German artist Fritz Heider (1868-1933) depicts a rugged landscape with storm clouds.

Earthy tones laid down in broad horizontals break to reveal a channel of light. The sun, wrapped in a turbulent swirl of clouds, emanates from behind cover. On the right, the dark form of a tree in near silhouette cuts into view. Its forceful branches comparable to an explosion. While in the distance, the horizon appears between layers of daubed foliage.

Little is known about Fritz Heider, which is surprising given his accomplished expressive style. There was a Fritz von Heider (1868-1933) who was born in the same year but the two appear to be unconnected.

A fascinating mood-filled piece.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
