This exquisite mid-19th-century portrait by German-Polish artist Friedrich August Kübler (1804-1844) depicts a gentleman in profile.
Attired in the latest fashion with upstanding collar, necktie and full-length sideburns, he conveys a sharp image. Portrayed in profile, somewhat akin to a cameo.
A German inscription on the reverse translates as:
“Matzdorf, half-brother of ancestor Juliane Klinner who came to Cologne with her parents from Brieg, Silesia in 1815.” Silesia is in Poland.
It’s tricky to identify the sitter as there were several Matzdorfs living in Silesia at that time. But it’s interesting that the artist Friedrich August Kübler was born in Legnica, Lower Silesia.
Signed/dated lower right and held within a later frame.
