Portrait Of A Family

This beautiful mid-19th-century group portrait by British artist Frederick Cruickshank (1800-1868) depicts a father, mother and their two daughters within an interior setting.

It’s a charming snapshot of a loving family.

The outfits date to around 1860 with the female sporting an impressive bell-shaped skirt, probably supported by hoops. While he wears an appropriately fashionable coat and carries a top hat. Can you imagine how the family felt in the build-up to this portrait? The girls chatting excitedly, the mother eager to present the right image. I’m sure they were delighted with the result.

Cruickshank had been exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy for almost 40 years when this was produced.

Housed within a good later frame and glazed.
