Evert Moll, Harbour View

Evert Moll, Harbour View

This exquisite early-20th-century oil on canvas by Dutch artist Evert Moll (1878-1955) captures an interesting harbour view with an impressionistic touch. It’s possibly in Rotterdam where Moll often painted.

From our vantage point on the river bank, we look across the shimmering water towards a moored boat before a multivarious array of colourful buildings. The awnings of shops visible on the right. While on our left, an impressive bridge strikes an imposing form with its verticals catching a strong light. Each time you look upon this piece, you'll see something else.

Impressionism isn’t straightforward and it’s rare to find such an accomplished work. Moll took on a challenge here, it’s a complex view, packed with interest and competing forms that reflect light in their own way. Yet, he succeeded and it’s a masterpiece. Certainly one of his finest.

Signed and held within an impressive gilt frame with decorative foliate.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
