This evocative early 20th-century pastel by German artist Erwin Starker (1872-1938) captures a rolling view in the Neckar Valley, near Stuttgart.

An impressive tumble of colours undulate across autumnal hills - culminating in a stripe of blue.

In the foreground, the lilac foliage is offset by a striking birch that leans right following years of gales. While a splash of river draws the eye down the valley and out towards the horizon.

Starker loved this area and often came here to sketch. He was born in nearby Stuttgart and spent much of his life in his hometown.

Signed in the lower left, framed and glazed.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
