Erich Mercker, Seascape

Erich Mercker, Seascape

This delightful 20th-century oil painting by German artist, Erich Mercker (1891-1973), depicts the effects of light upon an undulant sea. The sailboats, mere gestures in paint, seem to bob with the waves. While the sky is a colourful array of flicks and twists.

Mercker is known predominently for his industrial landscapes but he was also a master of impressionist seascapes. Clearly inspired by the French impressionists, he spent his career working in this manner - perhaps becoming looser and more gestural towards the end of his life.

This particular work was probably created in the 1960s and it’s a good example of his later style. From the 1950s, he’s known to have worked in Italy.

Monogrammed and housed within a good decorative frame.
