Erich Mercker, Seascape

Erich Mercker, Seascape

This delightful 20th-century oil painting by German artist, Erich Mercker (1891-1973), depicts the effects of light upon an undulant sea. The sailboats, mere gestures in paint, seem to bob with the waves. While the sky is a colourful array of flicks and twists.

Mercker is known predominantly for his industrial landscapes but he was also a master of impressionist seascapes. Clearly inspired by the French impressionists, he spent his career working in this manner - perhaps becoming looser and more gestural towards the end of his life.

This particular work was probably created in the 1960s and it’s a good example of his later style. From the 1950s, he’s known to have worked in Italy.

Monogrammed and housed within a good decorative frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
