Eric With, Workers’ Cafe

Eric With, Workers’ Cafe

A lively mid-20th-century oil on canvas depicting a busy cafe by Swedish artist, Eric With (1916-2000).

The painting is titled ‘Arbetarfik’, which appears to be a word with no direct English translation but loosely translates as “Workers’ Cafe”. Perhaps this place was situated close to a factory or port and some of the workers would pop in before heading home for the night.

We love the energetic brushwork and bright colour palette. You can almost hear the hum of conversation.

The painting is signed towards the lower right and housed within a frame that’s probably the original.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
