Emmery Rondahl, Study Of A Male Nude

Emmery Rondahl, Study Of A Male Nude

An outstanding academic study of a male nude by Danish artist, Emmery Rondahl (1858-1914). The figure has been keenly observed with careful attention to the musculature. Note the intelligent use of light and shade on the left side of the torso, which highlights the rib cage. A truly sublime drawing.

Rondahl produced this piece at the age of 20 during his time at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.

The drawing is stamped with a date in the top right and housed within a good later frame.

Medium: Pencil and charcoal on paper
Overall size: 22” x 31” / 56cm x 78cm
Year of creation: c. 1878
Provenance: Denmark

Artist’s Auction Highlight: £2,559 achieved for an interior scene at an auction in 2006.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
