Eleanor Stewart Wood, Portrait Of A Woman

Eleanor Stewart Wood, Portrait Of A Woman

A beautiful Edwardian portrait of a lady wearing a peach dress with a white wrap, rose, and lavish jewellery. The artist, Eleanor Stewart Wood (act.1876-1910), has worked with a degree of freedom and expression to capture the subject’s character.

Wood was an interesting painter who adapted her style over the years. Her early work tended to be finer with influence being drawn from the old masters. Several of her works from the late 19th-century depict abundant bouquets, which are reminiscent of 18th-century continental still lifes.

Whereas her portraits from the early 20th-century are somewhat looser and more characterful - with this being a good example.

The painting is signed in the lower right and housed within a vintage frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
