This fine late 20th-century watercolour by British artist Edward A Swan (b.1935) depicts two sailboats buffeted by turbulent conditions. Beyond, the hazy form of a frigate under full sail seems restful in comparison. Wreckage in the foreground reminds us of the perils of the sea.

Little is known about Edward A Swan but he’s synonymous with marine scenes. His style is wholeheartedly traditional and echoes the masters of yesteryear. An exceptional draughtsman, he trained at St. Martin's School of Art in London and this is a good example of his work.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
