This late 19th-century oil on canvas by Danish artist Edvard Petersen (1841-1911) depicts a backlit wooded view with wandering cattle.
As the gentle glow of a setting sun slips beyond our view, limber trees stretch skywards like old kindred spirits. Reaching towards the heavens with an ethereal undertone. Connecting nature to the great beyond and man with nature itself. Petersen describes this via a portrait composition, which emphasises the epic canopy as it towers over the cattle. Our low vantage point amplifies the sense of majesty.
Petersen worked in a style influenced by one of the masters of romantic Danish landscape painting, Vilhelm Kyhn (1819-1903). Kyhn’s landscapes are often exquisitely rendered and celebrate an idealised view of nature.
The painting is monogrammed, dated and housed within a gilt frame.
