This vibrant mid-20th-century oil painting by Danish artist Eduard Borregaard (1902-1978) depicts an arrangement of blooms, including sunflowers, set within a blue and white jug.
Borregaard’s oeuvre is a veritable riot of colour and texture. Inspired somewhat by the post-impressionists, particularly Vincent van Gogh, his spirited brushwork brought energy and depth to otherwise static subjects.
Here, in this buoyant piece from around 1940, the flowers are akin to a burst of effervescent fireworks illuminating the night sky. While a rhythmical mass of leaves is described in tangled greens.
The brushwork itself is typically confident with areas of impasto. He’s probably used a palette knife to layer the oils thickly.
