Early 20th-Century Swedish School, The Artist At Work

Early 20th-Century Swedish School, The Artist At Work

This early 20th-century oil on canvas depicts an artist working within a studio environment. He’s painting a mountainous landscape, which feels akin to a view across a Norwegian fjord.

Ahead of him, a second artist smokes while producing his own work. Could the setting be an academy? Did the artist abandon his original idea in favour of painting the figure immediately ahead of him?

Signed illegibly and framed.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 24” x 32½” / 61cm x 83cm
Year of creation: c. 1920
Condition: Artwork presents well. Minor craquelure but the paint is stable. Frame with some light wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
