River Landscape With Cottage

This early 20th-century oil painting depicts a river landscape with a rustic cottage and rowboat.

Nestled amid autumnal foliage, a stone cottage stands alongside a sinuous tree. It’s buried in nature, as it has been for decades. A boatman, perhaps its owner, readies himself to head downriver. The shimmering water peppered with algae.

The work bears an indecipherable signature, which is a shame as it’s by an accomplished hand. In many ways, it’s similar to landscapes by French artist Eugene Galien-Laloue (1854-1941) who worked under several pseudonyms.

Held in a decorative scroll and foliate frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 17½” x 14” / 45cm x 35cm
Year of creation: c. 1930
Condition: Artwork presents well. Fine craquelure but the paint is stable. Frame with some light wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
