Late 19th-Century German School

Isar Meadows, Munich

This late 19th-century impressionistic German oil painting depicts an autumnal day on the banks of the Isar River in Munich, Germany.

Under a spirited cloud-filled sky, the river winds through rugged scenery. The water captured in the foreground with a haze of tints and tones. Beyond, a splash of white catches the eye, while a dark copse on the left guides us to a distant horizon.

The work is signed ‘Hammerschmidt’ but it’s tricky to attribute to any well-known hand. It’s quite early for this style and they almost certainly trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.

Signed/dated lower right and held within a later frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
