Interior With Nude & Mirror

This early 20th-century German oil painting depicts a standing nude posing before a gold-framed mirror.

She glances back via a reflection with a smile and a glint - it’s cheeky, joyous and daring. Stretching her arms upwards as if recently woken. It seems personal, does the artist know her?

Both the figure and room are nicely rendered. Note the brightly-coloured cushions in subtle daubs and the clever realism in the skin tones. It’s an effervescent work brimming with spirit.

Signed illegibly in the lower right and held within a later frame.

Medium: Oil on cardboard
Overall size: 12½” x 16” / 32cm x 41cm
Year of creation: c. 1920
Condition: Artwork presents well. Frame with some light wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
