Early 20th-Century French School Portrait Of A Lady

Early 20th-Century French School Portrait Of A Lady

A fine early 20th-century portrait of a lady wearing a black dress and a long gold chain. She could be in the later stages of mourning.

How do you read her expression? For me, I see a sadness in the eyes but a strength to carry on regardless. She looks directly at us with an inner steel to her character.

The portrait is signed ‘Lebrun’, dated 1902, and housed within a decorative foliate frame.

Medium: Oil on panel
Overall size: 14” x 16½” / 36cm x 42cm
Year of creation: 1902
Provenance: Poland
Condition: Very presentable with some minor restorations. Frame with some light wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
