Early 20th-Century Evening Street Scene With Canal & Figures

Early 20th-Century Evening Street Scene With Canal & Figures

An impressionistic early 20th-century oil on canvas depicting a chilly scene in Scandinavia. The evening’s sun is disappearing on the horizon as a group of figures rest by a canal.

The artist, S Wedel, has created a beautiful graduated sky that culminates with an intense glow of pink and orange. It’s an unusual piece due to the contrast between the dark architectural silhouettes and the light blue above.

The painting is signed/dated in the lower right and housed within a later gilded frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 25” x 21” / 63cm x 53cm
Year of creation: c. 1903
Provenance: Sweden
Condition: Presentable. Craquelure in areas but the paint layer seems stable. Frame with a little wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
