Helge Helme

Royal Danish Academy Of Fine Arts, Interior

A fascinating early 20th-century oil painting by Danish artist Helge Helme (1894-1987) depicting a session at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.

Towards the middle of the scene, a life model poses with a stick in her left hand - several artists are studying her intently. We particularly love the attention to detail here with one of the artists rocking forward on his stool.

The painting is inscribed on the reverse and housed within a period frame. It was completed in 1920 when Helme was in his final year.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
