Early 20th-Century Danish Genre Scene With Coastal Track

Early 20th-Century Danish Genre Scene With Coastal Track

A fine early 20th-century oil on canvas depicting a picturesque coastal view and two villagers nattering over a rustic wooden fence.

The artist, C Uhlig, has pulled us into the scene by positioning a well-worn track beneath our feet. This technique lets our minds wander as we imagine walking towards the brightly lit cottage immediately before us. Perhaps we would overhear the couple chatting as they set the world to rights?

“Have you heard what they’re doing now, Alma?”

The painting is signed in the lower left and housed within an ornate gilded frame with repeating foliate.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
