Portrait Study Of An Edwardian Gentleman

This early 20th-century British oil painting depicts an Edwardian gentleman with a beard and moustache.

With his deep-set, all-knowing eyes, carefully coiffed moustache and furrowed brow, he’s a chap with a host of stories. He’s lived through the Victorian era, seen a bewildering amount of change - both in terms of technology and society. And here he is, late in life, captured skilfully by a well-trained hand.

When acquired, the painting lacked clarity due to its degraded varnish and accumulated soot etc. Following a thorough clean and revarnish, its evident qualities were revealed, much to our satisfaction. The transformation was considerable and it’s a fine work.

Held within a later frame.
