Early 20th-Century Austrian School, Still life With Pomegranates, Apples & Cornflowers

This fine early 20th-century still life by Anton Sitzes depicts a variety of fruit including pomegranates, apples and an orange along with a vase of cornflowers. The fruit is rendered with careful scrutiny and the palette creates an unusual harmony.

Sitzes also reminds us of the inevitable decay within nature via the inclusion of a fly on the foremost pomegranate. It’s a technique that references the Dutch masters of yesteryear.

The painting is signed in the top right and housed within a period frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 24” x 28” / 61cm x 71cm
Year of creation: 1925
Condition: Overall very presentable. Frame with some light age-related wear.
