Bay Horse In A Landscape

This charming early 19th-century English school oil painting depicts a bay horse before a picturesque landscape.

The British aristocracy has always had a passion for equestrian activities and during the 1820s, when this piece was produced, country homes were filled with images of beloved equines. Horses were significant members of the family, trusted, loyal, and characterful. As such, numerous artists, both established and provincial, were commissioned to produce portraits of this nature.

The artist here is unknown but stylistically it’s of good stock.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
