    Portrait Of A Child With A Rose

    This splendid early 18th-century English School oil painting depicts a child wearing a beautiful blue gown and red shawl. She holds a rose in her right hand and stands before a window.

    During the early to mid-18th-century, children were dressed as miniature adults and from the age of three, girls usually wore corseted bodices for formal occasions. A portrait sitting for one’s child enabled a family to demonstrate its wealth and, as we see here, no expense was spared on the sumptuous fabrics.

    The inclusion of a rose symbolises the young lady’s purity and these are often associated with the Virgin Mary. Indeed, the blue and red colouring of the outfit are also synonymous with depictions of Mary.

    Details of the sitter are unknown but she was unquestionably attached to an English aristocratic family of some repute.

    Condition: Assessed and approved by our conservator. Cleaned. Revarnished. Canvas relined. Fine and settled craquelure, as you would expect. The paint layer is stable. Frame with light marks and signs of age.
