Early 18th-Century Continental School Still Life With Flowers

This impressive early 18th-century continental school still life depicts an abundance of flowers emerging from an urn. They’re set within a decorative alcove.

This iconic style of still life was originally made popular by the Dutch old masters in the 17th century when many of the flowers depicted were considered highly exotic and precious. In fact, it was often cheaper to hire an artist to paint a bouquet rather than buy the originals. During the 18th century, the popularity of this style of painting grew throughout the continent and this piece is probably French or German.

The painting is housed within a later frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
