Nocturne With Cottages

This atmospheric mid-19th-century nocturne by Danish artist David Monies (1812-1894) depicts two cottages under the gentle glow of a partially covered moon. On the right, a man appears to be tending to his horse by an open barn door. While on the left, another chap casts a long shadow as he walks through the light.

Signed in the lower left and framed.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
