David Bates

The Brook

This charming landscape painting by English artist David Bates (1840-1921) depicts three cows standing in a brook on a warm Summer’s Day. As you can imagine, cows are known to do this in an effort to cool down.

Bates was an ‘open air painter’ and relished being close to nature. His later works tend to be quite relaxed and with an emphasis on the picturesque scenery he encountered.

The painting is housed within a handsome scroll and foliate frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
