David Bates, Moel Siabod, Capel Curig

David Bates, Moel Siabod, Capel Curig

This enchanting landscape painting by English artist, David Bates (1840-1921) depicts Moel Siabod, a mountain in Snowdonia, Wales. Bates has composed a view from Capel Curig to the north.

He often painted in this area and several works exist of the tracks around Capel Curig. Bates was an ‘open air painter’ and relished being close to nature. His later works tend to be quite relaxed and with an emphasis on the picturesque scenery he encountered. His figures are usually nicely done - as we see here.

Note the weight in the leaning figure on the right. A well-trained hand enjoying his work.

The painting is housed within a beautiful 19th-century gilt frame with foliate.
