Danish School Portrait Of A Lady With A Floral Bonnet

Danish School Portrait Of A Lady With A Floral Bonnet

A fine mid-19th-century oil on canvas depicting a lady wearing a silk shawl and lace bonnet decorated with roses.

This beautiful little painting captures the essence of the sitter so well. Her eyes convey a kindness and there’s the inkling of a smile.

During the 1860s, bonnets were often decorated with an array of fancy ribbons, bows and flora. In this particular example, the lady appears to be wearing a pink and an orange rose on her left side.

The painting is housed within what is probably its original gilded frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
