Danish School, Early 20th-Century Portrait Of A Man In A Turban

Danish School, Early 20th-Century Portrait Of A Man In A Turban

A wonderful early 20th-century oil on canvas depicting a gentleman wearing a green jacket and waistcoat with a turban and blue neckerchief.

It’s been painted with sweeping broad marks, an impressionistic touch, and plenty of bravura. The artist has conveyed a sense of stoicism and pride with this gentleman - which is further enhanced by the profile perspective.

It’s signed in the top left and was initially considered a work by Danish artist, Hugo Vilfred Petersen (1870-1959).

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 16½” x 20½” / 42cm x 52cm
Year of creation: c. 1920
Provenance: Denmark
Condition: Good following a light restoration.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
