Reserved - Daniel Sherrin, Rural View With Pine Trees & Sunset

A beautiful landscape painting with country track and pine trees gently lit by the last of the evening’s sun.

This fine late 19th-century work is brimming with atmosphere and it’s a good example of Daniel Sherrin (1868-1942) at his best. We particularly love the sky tones, which shift between muted yellows, pinks and light blues.

Daniel Sherrin was born in Brentford, Essex and was trained by his father, John Sherrin - a flower and still-life painter. He was a keen follower of Benjamin Williams Leader (1831-1923) and painted in a similar style. It’s possible that he knew Leader well because Sherrin’s son, Reginald (1891-1971), was trained by him.

The painting is signed in the lower left and housed within a gilded period frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
