Claudius Dubiez, Still Life With Wisteria

Claudius Dubiez, Still Life With Wisteria

This enchanting still life by French artist Claudius Dubiez (act.1854-1902) depicts an arrangement of wisteria with a vase, jug and book. It’s exquisitely rendered with careful attention to the finer details. Note the light, which falls across the petals and illuminates the gilding on the book. And the gentle folds in the cloth, which rise and fall away.

Dubiez admired this decorative ensemble and captured its elegant beauty with a delicate touch.

Signed in the lower left and housed within a gilt frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
