Christian Tilemann-Petersen, Kitchen Interior Scene

Christian Tilemann-Petersen, Kitchen Interior Scene

A fine oil on canvas depicting a sparse scantly-lit kitchen by Danish artist, Christian Tilemann-Petersen (1874-1926). This is a masterclass in how to paint light cascading from a small window and the artist has captured a fascinating moment of complete stillness.

His attention to detail brings life to each object and we particularly love the folk art wall hanging and the impressive grandfather clock. If you give the painting some time, you can almost hear the clock ticking. Note also the splash of green reflected in the top right corner.

Christian Tilemann-Petersen had a skill for capturing the mood within quiet interior scenes and several of his works have appeared at leading auction houses.

The painting is signed/dated in the lower left and set in a frame which is probably its original.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
