Christian Eckardt, Portrait Of Johan Jacob Elmqvist

Christian Eckardt, Portrait Of Johan Jacob Elmqvist

This fine late-19th-century portrait by Danish artist Christian Eckardt (1832-1914) depicts Johan Jacob Elmqvist. It’s an accomplished work that conveys a sense of the subject’s character.

Eckardt was predominantly known as a marine painter and this is a rare venture into portraiture. Perhaps he knew the subject. Information is scarce regarding Johan Jacob Elmqvist but we have discovered, via ancestry records, that he had a wooden hand. Was this due to an injury? Was he a sailor that Eckardt encountered during his travels?

It’s interesting to note the various pentimento (changes in thinking by the artist), particularly around the face and shoulders.

The portrait is signed/dated and held within a decorative gilt frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
