Charles Greville Morris, Landscape With River, Cottage & Distant Hills

Charles Greville Morris, Landscape With River, Cottage & Distant Hills

A fine late-19th-century landscape painting by British painter, Charles Greville Morris (1861-1922). The composition is blissful and easy on the eye. Note how the tree on the left guides your view outwards towards the distant hills and past a charming cottage.

Morris hailed from Manchester, trained in Paris, and exhibited at the Royal Academy. He lived in St Ives from around 1892 and one of his works is currently held at the Manchester City Art Gallery.

The painting is housed within a period frame with swept corners and foliate decoration.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 25” x 30” / 64cm x 75cm
Year of creation: c. 1890
Provenance: England

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
