Carlo Hornung-Jensen, Rural Scene With Milkmaid & Stable Boy

Carlo Hornung-Jensen, Rural Scene With Milkmaid & Stable Boy

A fine early 20th-century oil on canvas depicting a rural scene with a milkmaid and a stable boy. It’s been beautifully rendered and the flowers in the foreground are particularly nice.

Towards the centre of the composition, we see a milkmaid carrying a pail while chatting to a stable boy. She appears to be giving him instructions so perhaps she’s the boy’s mother. The young lad doesn’t seem particularly happy about the conversation and we can only wonder what’s being discussed.

The artist, Carlo Hornung-Jensen (1882-1960) studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and enjoyed painting landscapes and naturalistic scenes.

The painting is signed in the lower right.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
