Carl Ludwig Bille, Seascape With Ships & Turbulent Sea

Carl Ludwig Bille, Seascape With Ships & Turbulent Sea

This dramatic 19th-century seascape by Danish artist Carl Ludwig Bille (1815-1898) depicts several sailboats buffeted by waves. The predominant ship leans towards its port side - a Danish flag flutters in the wind.

Bille was a master of marine scenes and spent many years offshore studying the conditions first hand. Underpinning his work was a passion for sailing and respect for those working at sea. His son, Vilhelm, and grandson, Willy, also became marine painters.

Signed in the lower left and framed.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
