Carl Ludwig Bille, Nocturne With Paddlesteamer & Rowing Boat

This peaceful 19th-century nocturne by Danish artist, Carl Ludwig Bille (1815-1898) evokes the elemental romance of the ocean under moonlight. A moment of calm after a long day of sailing.

Bille was a master of marine scenes and spent many years offshore studying the conditions first hand. Underpinning his work was a passion for sailing and respect for those working at sea.

Signed in the lower left and framed.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
