This early 20th-century oil painting by Danish artist Carl Hornung-Jensen (1882-1960) depicts a coastal view towards a sailboat atop turbulent waves. Flashes of bright light between dense clouds echo the highlights on a tumbling sea.

Hornung-Jensen painted this during the early part of his career - an excited artist exploring the fishing villages of the Danish islands. His style is usually a little finer than this brisk study as he was painting outdoors amid a challenging environment. Within the paint surface, small flecks of sand provide clues as to the conditions. Can you imagine him battling the elements while perched on the rocks?

Signed/dated in the lower right and housed within a fine gilt frame.
