Interior With Chairs & Book

This early 20th-century oil painting by Danish artist Carl Fisher (1887-1962) depicts two chairs and a book. It’s more akin to a still life than a scene.

On the surface, it appears quite simple, with the chair rendered at an angle - a book placed on top. But this chair is quite a star as it appeared in several of Fischer’s masterpieces.

It’s likely that a set of these chairs were housed within his own home as he often painted scenes including them. For instance, his work ‘Interior with the Artist's Wife (1920)’ along with ‘Young Girl at a Commode (1938)’.

Fischer studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
