Carl Budtz-Mølle, Afternoon Sun, The Silver Cliffs At Melsted

Carl Budtz-Mølle, Afternoon Sun, The Silver Cliffs At Melsted

This beautiful early 20th-century oil on canvas by Danish artist Carl Budtz-Mølle (1882-1953) is a triumphant celebration of light. The artist’s joy is apparent and it lifts the spirits to witness such radiance.

The ‘silver cliffs’ of Melsted in Denmark are an array of tints as they extend across the vista. Their rugged surfaces offset by the Summertime hues of the grasses. While in the foreground, four sheep graze in a shaded area - a perfect spot to enjoy the view.

Carl Budtz-Mølle spent some time in Italy where he studied the effects of the striking blue Mediterranean skies. Here, when back in Denmark, he transposed his passion for light upon the scenery before him.

The painting is double signed (twice by the artist) and housed within a gilt frame. The reverse bears an exhibition label.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
