Carl Birkso, Single Bedroom Lit By The Evening’s Sun

An unusual oil on canvas depicting a bedroom illuminated by the last rays of the evening’s sun. The artist, Carl Birkso (b.1901), has captured the rich orange hue of a sunset before darkness falls on this simple Danish interior.

Carl Birkso was a pseudonym for Frederik Drews - the son of Kaj Drews who is also known for his fine interior scenes. It’s interesting to consider why Frederik chose this particular room to focus on as he also painted it at other times of the day. Perhaps this was his own bedroom at the family home or somewhere he stayed during a study trip.

We particularly love the curious two-legged cabinet, which is presumably the result of some ingenious DIY.

The painting is signed in the lower right.

Overall size: 27½” x 19½” / 70cm x 50cm

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
