Coastal Nocturne With Sailboats

This fine late 19th-century nocturne by Danish artist Carl Bille (1815-1898) depicts an atmospheric coastal view.

A broad channel of silvery light radiates from a partially obscured moon while two sailboats bob near the shore. The sky is abundant with turbulence - offset by the hush of darkness.

Bille was a master of marine scenes and spent many years offshore studying the conditions first-hand. Underpinning his work was a passion for sailing and respect for those working at sea.

Signed/dated and held within a gilt frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
