Coastal Marine Scene With Ships & Overcast Sky

This fine 19th-century marine scene by Danish artist Carl Ludwig Bille (1815-1898) depicts several sailboats buffeted by waves. The predominant ship leans towards its port side - a Danish flag flutters in the wind.

Bille was a master of capturing seafaring conditions and spent many years offshore studying the elements first-hand. Underpinning his work was a passion for sailing and he probably sketched this while onboard. Note the tonal variance within each wave, bringing movement and added theatre.

His son, Vilhelm, and grandson, Willy, also became painters.
