This early 20th-century oil painting by Danish artist C Sorensen depicts a rustic interior with table, spinning wheel, chair, clock, and chest.
Little is known about C Sørensen, which is unusual given their evident skill. They worked predominantly during the 1930s and produced numerous interior scenes and occasional still lifes. They had a particular penchant for capturing depth via a view through a window, as we see here. It’s an idyllic vision of rural life, rendered in a charming fashion.
Its exacting traditional style is somewhat based upon the luminaries of the Danish Golden Age, particularly Frederik Vermehren (1823-1910). It’s a wishful image of a bygone, pre-industrialised, age.
Signed in the lower right and held within a gilt frame, which is probably original.
