British School, Coastal Scene With Sailboat

British School, Coastal Scene With Sailboat

An early 20th-century coastal scene depicting a sailboat grounded on a beach. The turbulent swirls of impasto and the energetic brushwork remind us of a little of Vincent.

The waves are brought to life with thick textured oils and you can almost hear them crashing on the shoreline. While above, a strong coastal wind rushes across the ocean.

You could class this style of painting as early expressionism - e.g. the artist has painted with expression and gesture to convey a mood or atmosphere.

The painting is signed 'Richard Short' in the lower right and we have a period frame if required.

Overall size: 25½” x 16½” / 65cm x 42cm

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
