Belgian School, A Cow Near The Willow

Belgian School, A Cow Near The Willow

This charming early 20th-century rural scene depicts a cow resting by an old gnarled tree. It’s essentially a study of the interplay between two natural forms.

Note the curvature of the tree as it extends towards the top right and how the base of the tree seems to echo the shadow cast by the cow. These intelligent touches define the composition and allow the fine brushwork to shine.

The painting is housed within an ornate later frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
