Axel Tallberg, Beer Drinker

Axel Tallberg, Beer Drinker

This late 19th-century etching by Swedish artist, Axel Tallberg, depicts an older man sitting in a cellar and drinking beer. He’s leaning back on a barrel and smoking a rather long pipe. Tallberg produced this during his six-year spell in England, so perhaps the pubs had a lasting effect on him.

Tallberg is considered to be one of the most important etchers of his generation and the British Museum holds another copy of this work.

Signed in pencil, lower right, and framed/glazed.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
