Axel Schovelin, Danish Landscape With Lake

Axel Schovelin, Danish Landscape With Lake

A fine 19th-century oil on canvas depicting an extensive view across a lake towards a distant town.

The artist Axel Thorsen Schovelin (1827-1893) was a precocious talent and he joined the Academy of Fine Arts at the age of 12. It’s possible that this is a view from one of the many beautiful wooded areas around Copenhagen as he particularly enjoyed the area.

The painting is signed in the lower left.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 41” x 30” / 105cm x 77cm
Year of creation: c. 1860
Provenance: Denmark
Condition: Very presentable overall. Three historic repairs to the canvas. Could be cleaned to restore vibrancy if required but personally we prefer it as it is.
Artist’s auction highlight: £13,206 achieved at a Danish auction for ‘Parti af Landsbyen Kragholm paa Faareveildgods paa Langeland’.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
