Axel Johansen, Harbour Scene Near Copenhagen

Axel Johansen, Harbour Scene Near Copenhagen

A light-filled impressionistic harbour scene by noteworthy Danish painter, Axel Johansen (1872-1938). The composition is skillfully balanced with the masts from each boat creating strong vertical lines that reflect across the water.

Such a beautiful summertime palette that seems to bring a little warmth into the room with every glance.

Johansen was considered to be one of the foremost Danish painters of his generation and exhibited regularly at the Danish equivalent of the Royal Academy. He studied at the Royal Art Academy in Copenhagen and many of his works reflect his love for the sea and sailing.

The painting is housed within a gilded frame with foliate corners and monogrammed in the lower left.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
